Most people don’t know that tooth decay, also known as cavities or dental caries, is the second most common disease in the U.S. next to the common cold. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens who are between 14 and 17 years of age are four times more likely to develop tooth decay than asthma. A cavity occurs when plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria that covers the surface area of a tooth, combines with sugary or starchy foods to produce acid that attacks a tooth’s enamel. The only way to fix a cavity after it exposes the root of a tooth is to visit a dentist. However, you can prevent cavities by brushing and flossing twice a day, getting your teeth professionally cleaned at least once a year and reducing the amount of starchy and sugary foods in your diet.
Damage to the Enamel
Another common dental problem that you can avoid is excessive damage to the enamel of your teeth. This erosion of the enamel can be caused by over-brushing, acidic foods and carbonated drinks. In addition, enamel erosion can also be caused by acid reflux disease, which allows the stomach’s acidic contents to enter the mouth. Some signs of enamel erosion include discoloration, cracks and tooth sensitivity. After a tooth’s enamel erodes, you may experience pain because the erosion exposes the tooth’s sensitive dentin. Furthermore, teeth that have enamel erosion are also more susceptible to cavities. To prevent enamel erosion, you need to minimize your intake of highly acidic food and drinks, brush with a fluoride toothpaste and drink water throughout the day.
Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease occurs when plaque attacks your gums instead of your teeth. The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, which results in the gums becoming inflamed and bleeding after brushing. When the gums recede and form spaces that get infected, it is called periodontitis. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, other symptoms of periodontal diseaseinclude swollen gums, persistent bad breath and loose teeth. People who smoke, suffer from a chronic illness or have poor dental habits are especially susceptible to gum disease. However, this disease is easily preventable by conscientiously brushing your teeth, flossing and getting regular dental checkups.
